Pick up a bass you have never played before and something interesting happens. Within a minute — sometimes within seconds — you already have an opinion. It feels good, or somehow it doesn’t. That is actually rather strange when you think about it. You probably haven’t checked the neck radius, measured the action, looked up the body wood or asked what gauge strings are on it. You may not even have plugged it in yet, and still your hands are already telling you something.
So what exactly are they telling you?
The obvious answer is that we are feeling many things at once. More interestingly, those things don’t work independently. A neck profile that feels wonderful with one setup may feel less comfortable with another. A different set of strings can transform an instrument, while a bass that feels slightly stiff in one player’s hands may feel wonderfully responsive in another’s. And there is another complication: the same bass can feel different in your own hands depending on where, how and what you are playing.
So perhaps feel isn’t really a property of the bass at all. Perhaps it is something that happens between the instrument and the player.
It starts with the instrument
The neck is probably where most players start. Profile, width, radius, fret size and fretwork all influence the relationship between your hand and the instrument. String spacing at the bridge and the nut. Construction matters too: the neck joint, rigidity of the neck and the way the whole instrument responds to string vibration all contribute to what happens under your fingers.
But bigger, smaller, thinner, flatter or stiffer isn’t automatically better. The question is whether all those elements work together, and more importantly, whether they work for you.
Wood plays a part as well, although perhaps not quite in the simple way it is sometimes described. Wood affects weight, stiffness, resonance and the physical behaviour of an instrument, but statements such as ash sounds like this and alder sounds like that are too easy. Two pieces of the same species can differ considerably, and by the time body, neck, fingerboard, hardware, construction and electronics are combined, it becomes very difficult to point at one ingredient and say: that is what you are feeling.

The same applies to weight. As discussed in an earlier article, the number on the scale doesn’t tell you how a bass will sit on your body. Body shape, strap-button position, neck weight and overall weight distribution can make a heavier bass surprisingly comfortable — or a lighter bass surprisingly tiring. Comfort affects how freely we play, so balance inevitably becomes part of feel too.
These are all important characteristics, but most of them are largely built into the instrument. What happens when we start changing the things that can be adjusted?
Setup: where the bass meets the player
Action is probably the first thing most players think about when discussing setup, and somewhere along the way low action has almost become synonymous with good setup. But is lower always better?
For a player with a light touch, very low action can feel fantastic. Someone who plays harder, however, needs more room for the strings to move. Take too much of that room away and digging in eventually stops producing more energy and character and starts producing mostly fret noise.
This can lead to a rather curious situation. Once the strings begin to choke or rattle under a heavier touch, you may subconsciously start holding back to keep the sound clean. The bass starts to feel restrictive, your hands become less relaxed and you may even conclude that the action feels too high and should be lowered further — when giving the strings a little more room might actually make the bass easier and more enjoyable to play.
Relief and nut height are part of that same equation, as are pickup height and the response of the electronics. Small changes can alter the relationship between what your fingers put into the bass and what the instrument gives back.
This is why I am always slightly cautious when someone picks up an unfamiliar bass and immediately concludes that its action is too high or too low. Sometimes it certainly is, but sometimes the instrument is simply set up for a different pair of hands. The best setup, therefore, isn’t a set of measurements. It is an adjustment of the instrument to the player. But even that doesn’t quite explain everything.
I have played basses that felt beautifully set up at home and considerably less comfortable a few hours later on stage. If neither the bass nor the setup had changed, what had? The setup hasn’t changed — but you have

Usually, without thinking about it, you start working harder. You dig in more, use more force and try to create with your fingers what you are not getting back from the sound system. After a while the bass may start to feel physically harder to play, and it is easy to conclude that the action is too high. Yet lowering the strings may solve absolutely nothing. The real problem was never the setup. It was the mix.
Give that same bass enough definition and presence and your hands may relax almost immediately. Suddenly there is no need to force every note into the room because the sound system is already doing that job for you.
There is an interesting physical version of the same phenomenon. Players who have used a vibration platform, bass shaker or a similar system will probably recognise how convincing a bass can feel when the low frequencies are physically transmitted through your body. The actual acoustic volume doesn’t necessarily have to increase, yet the bass suddenly seems bigger and more substantial. And when the bass already feels big, you are less inclined to make it big by working harder.
Perhaps, then, playability doesn’t stop at the output jack.
What are you actually playing?
There is another reason why the perfect setup is difficult to define: we don’t all ask the same things from an instrument.
Musical style has an influence on the way we attack the strings, how much dynamic range we need and even what we consider a desirable sound. It isn’t an iron law, and there are obviously countless exceptions, but jazz and funk players often favour a relatively low action that suits articulation, speed and a lighter touch. Rock players frequently want a little more room to dig in, while reggae players may prefer enough space for the strings to move freely and produce a large, fundamental-rich note.
The important point isn’t that one genre requires one particular setup. It is almost the opposite: a measurement that is perfect for one player may make very little sense for another. Instead of asking “How low can the action go?”, perhaps the more useful question is: Where does this bass work best for the way I play?
And action is only one adjustable part of that equation.
Intonation: something you hear — and feel
We normally talk about intonation as a technical adjustment: compare the harmonic of the open string with the fretted note at the 12th fret, move the saddle and repeat. That tells us how to adjust it, but not really why good intonation contributes to the way an instrument feels.
When a bass is properly intonated, notes seem to belong together more naturally. Intervals sound convincing, chords sit better and a line played high on the neck doesn’t suddenly seem slightly uncomfortable against the rest of the music. You probably don’t consciously think, this bass has excellent intonation. The instrument simply seems to cooperate. However, perfect intonation across a fretted instrument is impossible.
Frets are fixed, strings behave differently, and even the pressure from your fingers affects pitch. String height and gauge influence it too, so again we are dealing with interacting factors rather than one perfect measurement. What we are really looking for is the best musical compromise. And when that compromise is right, we often notice the result without knowing exactly what we are noticing.
The same is true of something we touch far more often than the bridge saddles.

We tend to choose strings primarily for sound: bright or warm, stainless steel or nickel, bronze or nylon, roundwound or flatwound. Coated or uncoated. Which brings us to perhaps the most difficult part of feel to describe.

You do something, the bass responds, you hear and feel that response and, usually without thinking about it, you adjust what you do next. That loop continues for every note you play. Which may also explain something else: why two experienced players can pick up exactly the same excellent bass and come to different conclusions.
Your right may be my wrong

What they cannot tell us is how all those individual characteristics will interact with our hands, our technique, our amplification and our music.
Perhaps that is why finding a bass that really feels right can be so difficult to explain. It may not be the instrument with the most impressive specification sheet, and it may not even be the one that creates the biggest impression during the first thirty seconds. The right bass is often the one that gradually makes you think less about the instrument and more about the music.
